A Message from Michelle

I'm Michelle Surgent (formerly Michelle Lo Conte). I married the love of my life on October 13, 2012. As a bridal hair and make-up artist I had to ensure my hair and make-up was FLAWLESS for my special day and I cannot wait to give you the same gorgeous glow on your wedding day!

I feel as though I have the coolest job ever: I get to make you feel like the most beautiful woman in the world on the most important day of your life. It's rewarding on so many levels - and I love being a part of your love story. Your wedding day is the best day of your life and I get to be a part of that. It's simply the best.

Weekend after weekend, My job allows me to travel all over the tri-state area visiting fabulous hotels, stunning reception venues and cozy homes, where I get to use my talents and skills to not only create something beautiful, but make people feel beautiful. It's not just a profession, it's my passion!

Since 2001, with a simple ad on craigslist, I have been providing onsite hair and makeup services for brides and bridesmaids throughout the tri-state area ( My parents met in cosmetology school, so I guess you can say the beauty business is "in my blood." I knew how to French braid hair before I learned how to ride a bike! Hair styling and makeup artistry were two things that always came natural to me, so in conjunction with my fascination of the wedding industry; I have been so fortunate to customize the career of my dreams!

In 2008 I opened up Pink Comb Salon, whose initial location was in Nutley, NJ. After five amazing years of hard work and dedication and a tremendous amount of humbling success, I have relocated Pink Comb (now Pink Comb Studio) to the very beautiful Westfield, NJ where I can truly hone in on my very exclusive beauty services. I couldn't be happier making this move. It only ensures my clients nothing but the best.

I studied Hair, skincare, nails and make-up at Christine Valmy International in Pine Brook NJ and am a licensed Cosmetologist in the State of NJ. I have trained with MAC Pro, Temptu and Kett Cosmetics at the Kett HD Makeup Studio and have taken a variety of courses at Tobi Britton's "The Make-up Shop" in New York City. I am constantly attending training seminars as well as educating my staff on the methods to my beauty madness. I teach clients at my studio as well!

I hold my BS in Journalism with a dual minor in Theater and Advertising from St. John's University. If you subscribe to my newsletters or read my blog, you will see how I am putting my degree to good use!

about make-up

Pink Comb Studio's exceptional make-up artists are trained, certified and highly skilled. Each artist brings 5 plus years working on brides, bridal parties, special event make-up, photo shoots and faces from 5-95 years old. Our philosophy behind make-up is to make you look and feel like the most beautiful version of you.

Our bridal makeup applications make certain that you look stunning in person, in your photographs and in your video. All the professional make-up we use is photo-ready, water resistant and hypoallergenic. A variety of make-up brands and techniques are used depending on the look you want to achieve. The false eyelashes we work with are made from natural hair.

About Traditional Application

Our traditional sheer to full coverage make-up is waterproof and works with all skin types and comes in an all-inclusive color range. It was developed under a high definition camera, so no matter what type of lighting or the type of lens shooting you, you will look flawless without too much coverage. We work with several different brands when it comes to our traditional make-up applications. No two faces are the same and we will ensure you that will have the right "foundation" cocktail no matter what your needs are whether it be freckles, dry skin, allergies or an extremely light complextion.

About Airbrush Application

Airbrush Makeup is an extremely specialized makeup application. This technique allows for the artist to apply makeup through an airbrush sprayer, which finely mists on foundation and creates contouring effects giving you a natural, flawless and durable picture perfect skin. Your skin will look like those gorgeous models in magazines with "too goo to be true" complexions. With a superior waterproof technology, Airbrush was created for active wear, water scenes and WEDDINGS! This make-up provides sheer to maximum coverage, is smudge proof and non-transferable on clothes (perfect for the white gown!). It stays on until you take it off.

The Benefits of Airbrush Makeup

  • It is long lasting. There is no need for touch-ups – not even powder.
  • Each application is a custom color blend created by your make-up artist.
  • Your skin looks perfect and fresh all day – no matter how hot or humid it is.
  • It provides seamless contouring and highlighting to accent your most beautiful features.
  • There is a full color range to match your skin tone perfectly.
  • It does not rub off or transfer to your clothes.
  • It does not cake, smear or melt away.
  • It is lightweight looks and feel.
  • It's completely oil-free.

About Our Hair Extensions

The use of Hair Extensions is an art.

Temporary hair extensions is always an option to create the wedding hairstyle of your dreams. Looks can be deceiving and these days with all that's out there on the red carpet…why is that celebrities always have perfect hair? 9 times out of 10 they have some sort of extension attached to their hair.

With the use of extensions, we can get your hair to take on any length or fullness with the use of hair extensions. We work with temporary clip-in and permanent methods of human hair extensions for the day of your wedding. The use of extensions allows for you to have the wedding day hair you always dreamed of without years of growing it out.

Fine hair? No problem. We will customize your extensions to give you the look you want. Extensions can even be dyed and cut to match your hair flawlessly. We will also gladly suggest the method we feel is the best fit for your wants and needs.

Pink Comb Studio retails 100% Human Hair Clip-in Extensions in both straight and wavy textures at our studio in every color variation imaginable. No one needs to know it's in there but us!

Yes! We have three fabulous packages to choose from to keep me by your side on your special day. Check out our bridal menu for more information.

Would you travel for a destination wedding?

Our bags are packed!

Do you have a minimum?

There is a bride plus 4 person minimum to most areas of north Jersey. There are certain requirements for holidays and areas south of exit 90 on the Garden State Parkway as well as New York City. If you situation involves the above – just email us!

How far in advance do you recommend a trial?

We recommend doing hair and make-up trial 2-4 months before the big day. It gives you enough time to gather your headpiece, veil and pictures of hairstyle and make-up that you absolutely love but also gives enough time to come in again if you decide you want to try a different look.

When are trials done?

All trials are by appointment only and can be booked online or by calling the studio directly. Be sure you have inquired to ensure that our wedding date is available before you schedule your trial. During our high season we have little or no weekend availability as we are dedicating all of our energy and efforts to our brides and bridal parties from Friday through Sunday. We are happy to do our best to accommodate special requests.

If my wedding is still a year away, how can I book the date?

We offer brides the opportunity to send a $150.00 refundable deposit to book the date. The deposit is refundable up until three months before the big day. By taking advantage of this service, your wedding date is secured and you can take your time looking for hair and make-up styles as well as gather your accessories before coming in for your trial. If you would like to book the date, please inquire with Michelle – or by calling the studio directly at (908) 379-9980.

A Note from Michelle about Her Wedding Day Hair and Make-up

I wore my hair mostly down with curls and, of course, clip in extensions. I had my hairpiece made by Elisha Caplan Veils and Accessories, it was actually a detachable strap from my gown. My sister, Marena did my hair and I loved the way it came out. It was Carrie Underwood inspired. I always love her hairstyles. My make-up was regular make-up with false eyelashes. I chose grays for my shadows and eyeliner and Peach for my cheeks. It was very close to what I wear on a daily basis just a little more "glammed" up. I didn't want to shock my hubby too much and I wanted to still feel like "me."
